Why Training Your Dog is So Important For You and ...
A dog that is well-trained is a pleasure to be around. People and other dogs are happy to be in the company of a dog that knows how to behave. This dog sits and lies down upon command. He comes when called and walks on a leash without pulling. He is able to run in the park on his own because you know he comes back to you when called. He can go and be with the family on many occasions.
Having a dog that is well-trained keeps him safe, you, and others safe. You, as his owner, has have faith that he will not chase cars or other animals into the street where he could get hurt. In keeping your dog safe, he must learn the Sit, Stay, and Down commands. All other commands center on three. Training your dog to sit when an outside door is opened keeps him safe. He will not run out the door as soon as it is opened and get himself into trouble. Sit is a command that teaches your dog to control himself.
Remember that a dog does what you tell him to do to please him, not to please you. He is getting something out of obeying your commands. If a dog does not do what you ask of him, it is not because he is stubborn, dim-witted, or does not want to do it. It is because he does not understand what you are asking of him. A dog does not understand words but he does respond to your tone of voice.
It is you, your dog’s trainer, who needs to understand his needs. A dog, just like a human being, has emotional, physical, social, and nutritional needs. He will respond to kindness much quicker than he will to threats and anger.
A quiet, stress-free environment is necessary to train your dog effectively. The more distractions he is presented with during training, the less productive the session will be. He must be healthy and free of pain in order to train properly. Negativity reduces the dog’s ability to learn and retain training.
